A Happy New Year 2013!

2013 was a year of several Microsoft product releases: Windows 8, Windows Server 8, Office 2013, Windows Phone 8, Visual Studio 2012, SQL Server 2012, Microsoft Surface… What can we expect from the year 2013? Let’s start with a look back to 2012.

A personal look back to 2012

With my workshops, I had a huge demand for WPF workshops (that’s similar to 2011). This year also ASP.NET MVC and HTML5 was in demand – I also had some workshops to develop Windows Store Apps. Parallel Programming was a hot topic in 2012 as well.

With my own Websites, I moved to Windows Azure in 2012. http://www.kantine.at and http://www.cninnovation.com is hosted by Windows Azure Websites. Besides Azure Websites, I’m also using SQL Azure and Blob Storage for these sites.

My first Windows Store apps are in the store:

Picture Search is used for searching images via Bing Search – and sharing images, as well es doing slide shows:

Kantine (only available in Austria) shows menus of the week. The restaurant opens again on 7-January, so the next menus will be shown that day.

What can be expected from 2013? Let’s wait for the first blog entry of 2013.

Windows 8 UI Training mit HTML und JavaScript

Für die schnell entschlossenen gibt es 22.-23. August in Wien ein Windows 8 UI Training mit HTML und JavaScript! Voraussetzung sind Kenntnisse von HTML und JavaScript.

In diesem Workshop geht es um das Design von Windows 8 Modern Style Apps, Verwenden der Windows Runtime, und Integration von Windows 8 spezifischen Features wie die AppBar, Charms, Pickers, Tiles, und vieles mehr.

Nachdem wir für den Workshop ein Touch-Device brauchen, bekommt jeder Teilnehmer einen Samsung Series 7 Slate mit Intel Core i5 Prozessor, Docking Station und Samsung Wireless Keyboard.

jQuery und ASP.NET MVC Workshops

19. September und 20.-21. September gibt es in Kooperation mit Global Knowledge offene Kurse zu jQuery und ASP.NET MVC in Wien:

jQuery

Rasant erobert jQuery Web-Applikationen. jQuery ist u.a. bei Amazon, Twitter, Dell, IBM im Einsatz. Bei Microsoft Tools ist jQuery bereits Bestandteil von Web Applikations-Templates Visual Studio. Für Visual Studio wird dabei gleich integrierte Dokumentation angeboten.

Dass jQuery die Web-Welt im Sturm erobert hat auch seinen Grund. Mit jQuery geht es ein vielfaches einfacher als nur mit JavaScript Web-Seiten zu gestalten, manipulieren, und zu animieren. Und dabei ist Browser-Unabhängigkeit gleich integriert.

In diesem Workshop gibt es einen 1-Tages Einstieg zu jQuery, Selectors, DOM, Animationen, jQuery Utility Funktionen, und auch einen Einstieg in jQuery UI. Kenntnisse von JavaScript sind vorteilhaft.

ASP.NET MVC 3

ASP.NET Web Forms oder ASP.NET MVC? Nach 10 Jahren ASP.NET Web Forms ist es Zeit für eine neue Technologie, wobei ASP.NET Web Forms sicher nicht obsolete ist. Hier haben wir zwei unterschiedliche Herangehensweisen an die Programmierung von Web Applikationen. Während es bei ASP.NET Web Forms die Zielsetzung gibt dass der Entwickler Web Applikationen möglichst ähnlich zu Windows Forms programmieren können soll, Methoden und Properties von (server-seitigen) Controls verwendet die den Windows Forms controls möglichst ähnlich sind, und HTML sowie JavaScript nicht anzugreifen braucht (was sich dann aber oft doch anders herausstellt), gibt es bei ASP.NET MVC eine konträre Zielsetzung. HTML und JavaScript (siehe auch jQuery) haben in ihrer Bedeutung wieder gewonnen, mehr Kontrolle über HTML ist oft wünschenswert. Mit C# wird server-seitige Funktionalität programmiert. Mit der Struktur die von ASP.NET MVC vorgegeben wird ist es auch gleich viel einfacher Unit Tests für die Applikation zu erstellen.

In diesem 2-Tages Workshop gibt es einen Einstieg in ASP.NET MVC 3, mit Controllers, Views, Routing, Razor und vieles mehr.

6 new MCADs and 9 new MCPs

This summer I've given a .NET training for a group of 6 developers (picture) and software architects from EDS. After the training, all of the course attendees reached the MCAD certification. Now I'm running the same training for a second group from EDS with 9 developers. Monday and Tuesday were the dates for their first .NET exams on their way to MCAD: Developing and Implementing Web Applications with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET and Microsoft Visual C#. 9 of 9 succeeded with the exam! We have nine new MCP's!

The multi-week course is a course to learn Visual Basic and C#, core features of the .NET Framework, Web Forms with ASP.NET, Windows Forms, Web Services and .NET Enterprise Services.

The picture shows the new MCADs. The nice girl in the picture is still not an MCAD but instead responsible for the course organization.

MCT for 10 Years

Today I've received a congratulation email from Ken Rosen (Microsoft Program Manager, MCT) that I've reached the tenth anniversary of being an MCT (Microsoft Certified Trainer). I didn't know that I'm already MCT for ten years!

Checking my MCP transcript, I'm MCP since 1993, MCT since 1995, and MCSD since 1996.

These last years really a lot of products came along. I started working with Microsoft products with a beta version of Windows NT 3.1. Before that I've used Unix and VMS products. Since that time I've never stopped working with beta versions ;-)

The future will bring a lot more interesting stuff! The next weeks I'm helping customers with courses and consulting developing .NET 2.0 applications, and I'm already working with cool technologies that will be released some time after .NET 2.0.

Terrarium Day

On 20-February we will have a cool .NET Terrarium Day in Vienna, Austria.

In the morning I'm talking about technologies used with the .NET Terrarium application:

• Web Services
• Registration and Peer Discovery
• Dynamic Loading of Assemblies
• Version Updates (Smart Clients)
• ...

In the afternoon the attendees will have a challenge to program herbivores and carnivores for the terrarium. The winner will get an X-Box or one-year of Red Bull drinks

Course - Analyzing Requirements and Defining Microsoft .NET Solution Architectures

A extra course date was added (1 to 5-December) where I'm teaching the Microsoft course "Analyzing Requirements and Defining Microsoft .NET Solution Architectures". The course is in Vienna, Austria. You can contact me for more information.

This will be a fun-week about Analysis and Design of .NET applications; in addition the attendees will have it easier to pass the 70-300 exam "Analyzing Requirements and Defining Microsoft .NET Solution Architectures".
